Irresistible Bag

Today my youngest daughter has a party to go to.  I always try to give handmade gifts for kids parties - and this year all of my daughters' friends have been getting Pencil and Notebook folders.

I decided for this one - to make a matching tote bag to give it in - instead of using wrapping paper. Here it is:

And here's the gift and bag together:

The inspiration for this bag came from a brilliant book I found...

There are sooo many great ideas in this book - for bags made from all the different types of fabric you can imagine - and some you can't!
There are patterns and wonderfully clear instructions for each bag - from simple tote bags to knapsacks, a sewing machine cover, wash bags and even a log sack!

Here's the picture that inspired me to make my tote bag:

I didn't have sequin string - so used ric rac instead, stitching it to the fabric in a criss-cross pattern:

I matched the fabric to one of those I'd used on the pencil and notebook folder, and lined the bag with a nice silky fabric:

Hope the birthday girl likes her gift!

What handmade gifts to do give kids?

  1. That is such a lovely idea giving handmade gifts Jill. Both projects are fantastic. Hope this weather is not too damp for your parents visit. Great for gardening though. :-)

  2. What a fun mom you are. I am encouraged by your thoughtfulness and homemade gifts are usually less expensive and come with a higher love tag attached. :) I am slowly learning to sew and these ideas are great for me.

  3. I know someone was very happy to get this gift. The bag is really pretty.

  4. What a lovely gift! That bag is gorgeous and so well made. I'm sure it will be much loved!

  5. What a great gift, the bag just adds a something special! I have recently started giving handmade gifts. So far only really crayon rolls, but I have plans for much more...

  6. I love the bag! I actually like the one you made with ricrac more than the one with sequins.

  7. Love the ric rac and the gorgeous colour of the bag. Two great presents that will almost certainly be loved. Way to go using the bag instead of paper. I'm wrapping my Christmas presents in fabric bags this year. Last night I wrote a post on Christmas wrapping, for another blog and will put onto my blog soon.

  8. Wow, what a brilliant gift! I am sure that little girl was thrilled.

  9. Wow so gorgeous and your photography is amazing-- such a nice touch to ad the white flower
Thank You for dropping by my blog

  10. That's a lovely idea, looks so gorgeous :)
