Tropical Palm Christmas Tree

Challenge 7 for our 12 Days of Christmas DIY Challenges is to take a walk around your garden or park and find something that you can make Christmas decor from.

Living in the tropics in Far North Queensland, Australia, I thought I'd try and use something tropical.

I found this dried palm tree seed pod in a friend's garden. I also gathered a few supplies from our shed to help me.

A saw to cut the branches, some stones, a plant pot and a can of silver spray paint left over from making costumes for my daughter's school musical production!

The seed pod is from a palm tree a bit bigger than the one in our garden. We have an unusual twin palm - one trunk that splits into two trees!

But getting back to the seed pod from my friend's garden.
I cut off the thick end and separated the branches that had held the seeds.

Then I sprayed them with the silver paint.

Once they'd dried, all that remained was to stand them up in the pot - using the stones to hold them in place.

So now we're all ready with our outdoor Christmas tree!

Add a few baubles to brighten it up.  And there you have it!

This Tree was made in response to Challenge 7 of the 12 Days of Christmas DIY Challenges. To see the challenge video and link up your own projects go here.

For 12 days starting on November 2nd we will set a challenge a day to create something for Christmas using just the resources you have on hand.
The idea is to show that Christmas Shouldn't Cost the Earth. If you're reading this, chances are you love to craft, but why not craft with the resources we have on hand - let's get creative!

Each day a challenge will be set by means of a video and blog posts giving some suggested ideas and crafts. These posts will also contain a linky party for anyone and everyone who wants to join in to link up their projects - both past and present, that answer the challenge.  The linky party can be found on all our blogs and we'll  try and come up with different ideas and tutorials for the challenges too. So please to visit us all, and then share your ideas with us as well! We're looking forward to seeing how these challenge are met!

Ready, Steady....Let's Christmas Craft!

  3. I am loving all the clever ideas on this 12 day challenge. We made something very similar to this last year sprayed gold. It is so effective yet simple and lasted the whole festive season. A great use of an old branch.

Thank you for sharing with me on #Trash2Treasure
