Cheesymite Scrolls - an Aussie Snack!

I don't usually post recipes, but I do like to share snippets of my life in Australia - and this is one of those snippets!

These scrolls are a favourite snack for my girls - and I like them myself too!
We used to buy them from the bakers as a treat, but then I found a recipe and now I make them most weeks and the girls get them in their school lunch boxes!

I'm not sure where I got the recipe from - I still have it written on a scrappy bit of paper (must get a round to writing it in my recipe book!!)

I thought I'd share the recipe here - a good Australian snack! What makes it Australian? The addition of this..

Cheesymite Scrolls

1. Mix 1 cup water and 1/2 tsp yeast until there are no lumps.
2. Add 25g melted butter, 1/4 cup milk, 5tsp sugar and 1tsp salt. Mix
3. Sift 3 cups flour in and mix, keep adding until dough loses most of its stickiness. Turn out and knead for 10 mins.

4. Put the ball of dough into a greased bowl.
Cover with a damp tea towel and leave in a warm place for about an hour.  It should rise and look like this:

5. Roll the dough out into a large square.
6. Here's where it gets Aussie!!
Spread with Vegemite and cover with grated cheese.

7. Roll carefully into a log and using a very sharp knife, cut into slices and place on a greased baking tray.

8. Cover with a damp tea towel again for around an hour and they should rise some more to look like this:
9. Bake in oven 200C  (395F) for 15 mins.

10. Enjoy your Cheesymite Scrolls!!  Yum!

    1. Hi Michelle

Can you get Vegemite in the US? We had Marmite in the UK growing up which is similar - but I have to say I'm a Vegemite fan now!

  2. Jill, you so cruel! :) Those buns look yumm and I am sure taste delicious! Thanks for the recipe :)
P.S. by the way, do you watch Master chief Australia? There is one woman-participant, who I don't know why, I associated with you when I saw her, most probably because she is Australian too, and you kind of resemble her :)hehe

  3. Hi Jill, I'm a newbie in the blog community but I've been getting your newsletter for quite some time! I really want to try these Cheesymites but I don't know if we have Vegemite here in Pennsylvania, USA. What is it exactly? Maybe we have something I can substitute for the Vegemite. Also, what kind of cheese(s) do you use? (Cheddar, Swiss, mixed, for example), and what kind of flour (self-rising, all purpose, cake flour, for example)? Thank you inadvance for your reply. These look sooooo scrumptious-my stomach is growling..lol. Thanks again! ~ Dawn ~ My email add. is: rodgers_bigsky@yahoo.com

    1. Hi Dawn

Thanks for your messagel - glad you liked the look of my Cheesymite scrolls - they really are yummy. Vegemite is a yeast extract - there are alternatives - Marmite and Promite, but I'm sorry, I'm not sure what's available in the US. I just use cheddar cheese and plain flour. I've been thinking of trying these with a different topping - I thought tomato pizza scrolls would be nice - just spread on some tomato paste with herbs then cheese instead of the vegemite - I'm sure that would taste great!

Good luck with them - hope you manage to make your version of them!

      Have a lovely weekend!
