This week's guest is Michelle from Threefold Designs in
South Australia

Now let's hear a little about Michelle herself!
 What do you create?
I’m a textile artist, and design cross stitch kits for people with more ‘alternative’ tastes!

·Why do you create?
Good question! I know it’s a cliché, but I feel driven to create – I have images in my head that I want to make into physical and tangible items … and when one is finished, I just have to start on something else. For me, working with wool is very meditative, grounding and satisfying.

·Do you sell your creations? If so, how? Where? And is it profitable?
At the moment, I sell my designs in kit form on my Etsy store (, and my website ( I am also starting to work on one-off pieces that I can sell through galleries and/or Etsy, as well as commission work. It is profitable? Well, it takes a very long time to stitch and design cross stitch kits, but one day I’ll sell enough so it will be!

·What mistakes have you made or lessons you have learned?
I’m a firm believer in the fact that there’s no such thing as a mistake, because lessons are learnt in so many different ways. For example, a couple of people offered to pose for me with my bookmark kits – I was so disappointed (and insulted) when one person lost them and didn’t seem to care. But the upside was that the other person did the complete opposite, going all out and getting a professional photographer! So what I thought was a stupid idea actually turned out a million times better than I expected ;) And yes, those photos will be appearing on my site soon …
·What, to you is success? Have you achieved it yet, or are you on your way towards success?
To me, success is doing what you love, and getting out there and showing people. So yes, by that definition I feel successful!

·So what's next?
At the moment I’m putting together some cool cross stitch kits for kids, using chunky plastic canvas and thicker wool in basic designs. I’m also studying woven tapestry (which is very different from needlepoint!), which will add a different dimension to my business with one-off pieces and commissions.
